The New England Bowlers Association returned to East Providence Lanes for the 2026 Dexter Bowling Singles Open, as 127 entries competed in a weekend that also featured the conclusion of the $10,000 Vincent Hall Memorial Cup Series and a special $1,250 youth prize fund.
When the final pins fell in the Singles Open, Henry Hecht stood alone as champion, defeating Nick DeFazio, 196-181, to capture the first NEBA title of his career.
Hecht's championship run took him through five rounds of single-game, single-elimination match play before finally breaking through and adding his name to the list of NEBA champions.
Bryan Bourget led qualifying with a five-game total of 1,238 to earn High Qualifier honors.
Competitors faced the 2024 PBA Steelsmith, measuring 42 feet with 28.6 mL of oil and a 4.62:1 ratio.
The condition, combined with the lane surface at East Providence Lanes, forced much of the field left as the tournament progressed. Early friction played a major role throughout the weekend, putting a premium on competitors' ability to manage the front part of the lane while still getting their bowling balls to retain enough energy to finish properly downlane.
Finding the right balance became increasingly important as the lanes transitioned. Players who allowed their equipment to expend too much energy through the early friction could struggle to create enough continuation through the pins, making lane play and ball reaction management critical throughout qualifying and match play.
The top 32 competitors advanced to Sunday's single-game, single-elimination match play bracket.

Hecht's path to the championship included a pair of strong 240-plus performances before the scoring pace tightened considerably in the final two rounds. He survived a five-pin semifinal against Chris Page before defeating DeFazio in the championship match to complete his run from the No. 27 seed.
The championship match featured two players seeking their first NEBA titles, with both making the bulk of their championship runs throwing urethane on the Rick Steelsmith pattern.
Henry Hecht began the match with a Purple Hammer, playing deeper through the middle of the lane. His opening shot left a 2-8-10, immediately prompting him to reconsider his approach and make a ball change just one frame into the match.
DeFazio stuck with his urethane game plan, playing more through the track area. He opened with a strike before his second shot crept slightly high, leaving a 4-pin that he converted to begin the match clean.
Hecht responded to his difficult opening frame by switching to the Storm Concept. The change paid off immediately with a strike in the second, followed by a stubborn 10-pin in the third.
Nick's next shot picked up an early read and went through the face, but he fortunately escaped with just the 6-10 and converted the routine spare. Looking to build some momentum, DeFazio was then stopped by a stubborn 10-pin of his own but continued his run of clean frames.
Now gaining confidence in his new ball reaction, Hecht caught a light mixing strike on the right lane. Another 10-pin on his next attempt, however, prevented him from building a string, and the resulting open frame kept the match leaning in DeFazio's favor.
Nick eventually made a ball change of his own in search of more strikes. An errant shot pushed wide right and left the 1-2-4, which he successfully converted. His next attempt featured a much higher degree of execution, but the transition on the left lane caused his ball to come in slightly later than anticipated. The result was a 2-10 split and DeFazio's first open frame of the match.
Seeing an opportunity to take advantage, Hecht executed what appeared to be a quality shot, only to be punished with a vicious pocket 7-10. The leave demonstrated just how difficult the condition had become, and another 10-pin for Hecht on the left lane continued to show how challenging it was to create consistent carry.
DeFazio returned to his urethane ball and delivered his best shot of the match, putting all 10 pins back and giving himself another opportunity to apply pressure. Nick followed by converting a spare in the eighth frame, putting the ball back in Hecht's hands with the championship still very much undecided.
That was when Hecht made one of his most important adjustments of the match. He changed his hand position, adding just a little more rotation to help his ball continue through the pins. The adjustment was rewarded immediately with a strike in the eighth.
He then moved to the lane that had given him the most trouble throughout the match and attacked it with the same hand position. This time, all 10 went down again, giving Hecht his first double of the championship match at the most crucial moment.
DeFazio answered with a huge strike of his own, giving himself one final opportunity to make a run at Hecht. Nick stepped into the 10th and closed with a spare and strike, forcing Henry to deliver the first strike in the 10th frame to secure the championship.
With the ball in his hand, Hecht stepped onto the approach to deliver the most important shot of his NEBA career.
He executed when it mattered most.
All 10 pins fell, effectively sealing the championship and leaving Hecht needing only good count on his fill ball. He fulfilled that requirement to close out a 196-181 victory over DeFazio and officially capture the first NEBA title of his career.

With the victory, Henry Hecht captured the first NEBA championship of his career, completing a five-match run through the bracket and becoming the latest first-time champion of the 2026 season.
The Dexter Bowling Singles Open featured a total main-event prize fund of $9,230, with prize money extending through all 32 competitors who advanced to match play.

The Dexter Bowling Singles Open also provided another major opportunity for NEBA's youth competitors, with a special $1,250 youth prize fund available in addition to the main tournament payouts.
The additional prize fund was made possible through the support of DJBT, Northeast MegaBucks, Island Bowling Supply and NEBA.

Antony also earned her way into the main tournament finals, eventually finishing 15th and earning an additional $240 from the regular event prize fund.
NEBA extends its appreciation to everyone involved in providing these additional opportunities for youth bowlers to compete alongside some of the region's top competitors.

Both Hall of Famers earned their way into the 32-player championship bracket, continuing to compete alongside multiple generations of NEBA competitors.
The Dexter Bowling Singles Open weekend also marked the conclusion of the 2026 $10,000 Vincent Hall Memorial Cup Series.
After a season-long elimination process reduced the field to the final 20 competitors, Chris Viale emerged as the 2026 Vincent Hall Memorial Cup champion at East Providence Lanes.

Saturday's action begins with the Old Mountain Lanes Special Cuts, featuring competition for Women, Seniors and Super Seniors.
This event gives competitors in each of NEBA's special-cut divisions an opportunity to battle for a championship before Sunday's team event takes center stage.
Sunday brings something completely new to NEBA with the inaugural I AM Bowling 5-Person Baker Team Event.
For the first time in NEBA history, five-person teams will take on a Baker-format event, bringing a completely different style of competition to the NEBA schedule. Team chemistry, lineup construction and execution will all come into play as NEBA crowns its first-ever 5-Person Baker champions.
Make your plans for October 3-4 at Old Mountain Lanes for two days of NEBA competition and a weekend featuring two very different championship formats!
There is still time to qualify for the 2026 Cambridge Credit Invitational.
Bowlers need to compete in at least three regular-season NEBA events to become eligible for the season-ending Invitational. The Top 8 point earners will receive automatic spots into the Invitational Finals while still bowling qualifying, making every remaining event another opportunity to earn valuable points and secure eligibility for one of NEBA's biggest events of the season.
