Mahon Breaks Through for First Singles NEBA Title at Dexter & Turbo Grips Open
Tournament Recap & Jay Mahon’s Road to Victory
111 entries packed East Providence Lanes in East Providence, RI, for the 2025 Dexter & Turbo Grips Non-Champions Singles Open on July 13, 2025. Sponsored by Dexter and Turbo Grips, this NEBA stop challenged bowlers with the 2021 SYC Kansas Medium pattern (42’, 4.41:1 ratio, 25.76 mL).
Top qualifier Nathan DeMello set the pace with a stellar 1232 series. But it was Jay Mahon, qualifying out of the 1230pm Sunday squad, who made an unforgettable run through match play to capture his first NEBA title. Jay’s 1135 score would be enough to join as the 17 seed in the 24 match-play finalists bracket with the top 8 getting a 1-round bye.
It’s important to note Jay’s performance posted back-to-back championship appearances with his 2nd place finish to Kyle Wilks at the Many Styless of Bowling singles event just last month.
Match Play Breakdown
Match play featured 24 finalists including NEBA Hall of Famer, Joey Transue.
Mahon’s path began with a strong 212–211 win over Stephen Major, and he never looked back, adding wins against:
Nathan DeMello: 201–157
Ryan Chiaradio: 235–225
Tyler Hurne: 237–234
Meanwhile, Sean Richard lit up the early rounds with scores of 247, 245 and 246, defeating Jayme Silva, Jr., Keith Laing, and Nate Clarke to punch his ticket to the title match.
Championship Match Recap – Mahon vs. Richard
The start of the 2025 Dexter and Turbo Grips Open singles championship match showed early strikes from both competitors, both seeking their first singles titles. Progressing through the first half of the match we would see strikes flow from Mahon while Sean would find carry struggles despite controlling the pocket. Turning into the back half there would be new life breathed into the Richard camp with Mahon leaving consecutive 10-pins and Sean driving in a double in frames 7 and 8. Jay answered with a double of his own which forced quality shots from Sean entering the final frames. Richard with ball in hand stepped into the 9th only to leave a 6-10. While a spare conversion would keep Sean hanging on, it would ultimately be an untimely split in the 10th that would seal his fate and allow Mahon the freedom to finish.
Formality was all that separated Jay from hoisting the trophy and earning his first singles title and solidifying himself as a multi-title holder in the NEBA record books.
Top Payouts: 1st – Jay Mahon: $1,000 + TOC Entry 2nd – Sean Richard: $700 T-3rd – Nathaniel Clarke & Tyler Hurne: $550 each
